DHARMA BUMS
STRING BAND
& THE BIRD SEED BANDITS
8pm, SATURDAY AUGUST 18
The Dharma Bums String Band makes it's Unity Hall Debut on Saturday, August 18, 2012.
An eclectic outfit of talented musicians, the group delivers string driven
renditions of a wide range of material, including songs that
surprise and delight audiences.
Mike Stone (lead guitar) and Dave Ossont (rhythm guitar) first
played together back in 1973. Now another generation has been added as
Mike's son Brent (bass) and Dave's son Kyle (fiddle) join
in. Add in Brother/Uncle Dan Stone (mandolin), who has been on the
area music scene for over 30 years and you have a truly generational
family band.
The Bums music is impossible to
categorize. They've raided from just about every genre. There are large
doses from the Great American Songbook, but they are as likely to play a
fiddle waltz as they are Ellington. Beatles, Bob Wills, Bossa Nova and
Brubeck all get thrown into the pot. If you can conjure in your ears an
"acoustic swing jam band," you'd be in the right ballpark.
Described as 5 Jazz Hepcats-
trapped in the body of a bluegrass band
the Dharma Bums String
Quintet truly believes "it don't mean a thing if it
ain't got that swing."
The D.B. are like a dash of hot
sauce on an already tasty dish as they lend their interpretations to great
songs from songwriters as diverse as Lennon & McCartney, Rosanne Cash, Van
Morrison, Arlo Guthrie, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, and Dave Brubeck.
The Birdseed Bandits, comprised of Adam Ludemann Seth Becker
and Nash Robb, have a unique style and sound unlike any other. They
have been called, Puck/Americana or "Punkacana" Folk/Rock, Folk/Punk,
Celtic/Folk/Punk, "Foot stomping" Folk/Punk-Rock, Alternative Americana,
and all other sorts of names to describe what they do. With there high
energy performance, and raw acoustic sound consisting of Banjo, Acoustic
guitar, Mandolin, and Upright Bass, and ringing harmonies they have
cultivated a voice all there own.
