ABOVE STANDARDS
8pm - FRIDAY, JULY 27 2012
What do you
get when you mix a veteran “standards” piano man, a troupe of five
talented singers, and a love of show tunes and standards? The answer:
Above Standards! This entertaining troupe of performers takes the
stage in the historic upstairs theater at Unity Hall in Barneveld at 8p.m.
on Friday, July 27 2012.
Of course,
“above standards” is suggestive of the kind of music this troupe performs.
“Standards”
is the short hand term for the timeless melodies composed between the
1920’s and the mid-1950’s, music that gives meaning to Irving Berlin’s
saying that “the song is ended but the melody lingers on.” And, indeed it
does in the mix of dynamic full troupe songs, lovely duets, and melodic
solos from veteran presenters.
The
musicians are anchored by the wonderful piano styling of Dan Evans.
His working life in the Big Apple allowed him to play gigs and piano bars
for some forty years, learning and loving the show tunes and standards
that will be presented at Unity Hall. Standards member Gail Brett
of Wildflower fame has a knack for jazzy torch songs, Sarah
Beasley is earning acclaim for her appearances in community theater
productions and Alicia Loomis and David Kolb's musical
talents are well known in the region. John Preston,
presenter and host at the nearby Park Coffee House, completes the
group and gets to enjoy and evening of entertaining instead of
introducing.
If
you love big
show tunes, this is your concert! Songs from Guys and Dolls,
The King and I, The Phantom of the Opera, Carousel,
South Pacific, and West Side Story are featured during an
evening of great music in Barneveld that will also include Standards
staples like Here’s that Rainy Day, The Nearness of You, Ain’t
Misbehavin’, and Kansas City.
Performed
cabaret style, Above Standards' two sets of music will mingle duets and
solos with full troupe songs, moving between pretty ballads, show tunes
from well known Broadway shows, and up beat and jazzy toe-tappers.
The concert begins at 8pm. Doors to the theater will open at 7:45
and seating is first come first served. Refreshments will be
available.
Tickets for Above
Standards
are $10 in advance. Tickets at the door will be $10 at the
